Time-Test Quilt

I am testing myself this week, not in my ability but in how long it actually takes me to make a quilt.

I've never really worked out exactly how long I spend on a partiular quilt but I have been asked if I would make some quilts for a baby shop and I want to know if it would be worth doing it.

Can I make a quilt in a reasonable time? Can I get paid an acceptable amount for my time and still have it priced in a retail market so they sell?

I have decided just to make a very simple quilt of squares. It will be 28" x 44" (71cm x 111cm) the perfect little baby/cot quilt. Because it is not for anyone and just for my time trial, I didnt want to buy any fabric or really use any of my favourite fabrics. I found these in my stash....

It is not my usual colour palette and I wasn't 100% happy with the the fabrics but I picked a cute little print with a little girl, toys and  flowers, plus co-ordinating fabrics in lilac, pink, white and lemon.

So in 4 & half hours, from a stash of not so pretty fabrics..... This VERY pretty quilt has emerged. It has actually re-affirmed why I love of quilting. I did not like the fabrics, but after cutting them up and sewing them back to together - I LOVE IT!

So the questions are:
Will people want to pay $150-$170 for this quilt?
Is it worth my time trying to make quilts to sell?
If the design was more intricate, will people buy this for $200?

My first crochet animal - An Octopus

My son loves the Octonauts , a TV show on ABC for Kids based on a series of books by Meomi. I have recently bought him stuffed toys of the three main characters and decided to try my hand at crocheting a toy or Amigurumi (the Japanese name for a small crocheted toy/animal) to go with his Kwazii, Barnacles and Peso. The OCTONAUTS are a team of undersea adventurers who are always ready to dive into action! Their mission: to explore new underwater worlds, rescue amazing sea creatures and protect the ocean. The result is this little octopus. Im really happy with how it has turned out. I found this pattern online and made it up, without the bobble stitches on the underside of the tentacles, as I knew an 18 month old would just not appreciate the time of all those extra stitches! I also used a double crochet stitch to join the top and bottom together as it gives a nice orange 'border' to the white underside. It is approx 7cm tall x 14cm wide a...

A girl can never have too many shoes!

A very good friend had a 40th birthday last week and I made her a quilt. It is the perfect couch snuggle size of 51" x 75" (130cm x 190cm) and would also just fit on top of a single bed.   She loves shoes and the colour green. Although I tried to stay away from my 'safe pallete' of the moment, blues & greens, when I saw the border fabric at the shop, I knew it was just her.   I also wanted the quilt to be bright and fresh so I teamed the green, blue and teals with white as the backing of the appliqued shoe blocks.     I have really enjoyed making this quilt and it has been an interesting experience taking note of all the hours I have spent on it... 35 hours! Split approx 15 to sew the quilt top, 15 for the quilting and 5 for all the finishing, label, binding etc.   I had a large piece of the border fabric left over and rather than wasting it (or saving for another quilt), I decided to use it in the backing...

No sewing for nearly 2 weeks - Argh!

Ive been far too busy.... and Im starting to get withdrawals, so Im off to do some sewing tonight. Ive been volunteering my time working on the new Sands Queensland website. They have had it re-designed to fit in with a new national look, to go with a new logo and new colours. I have been transferring all the old data into the new site which at times has been quite arduous having to use the new interface but all the while it is me doing something for my girls. It was going to Sands support meetings, talking with other bereved parents, that made me feel not so alone after my twins died. It was a life-saver. I am giving my bit back to them by doing volunteer work since early 2009. Doing many things but for the last few years I have been looking after their website. It has never been a big job, just a little thing I'd update every month with upcoming events and maybe a notice or two. But transfering all the content over, reformatting it, adding in lots of picture...
